Maria Ginter came from a family of landowners, participated in the resistance movement during World War II, fought in the Warsaw Uprising, and joined the ZWZ-AK assuming the pseudonym Iza. After being arrested, she was imprisoned in Pawiak prison. Since childhood she had been involved in equestrian activities, and also trained in tennis and skiing. As a writer, she published numerous memoirs, including "Galopem na przełaj", "Z wiatrem pod wiatr", "Galopem pod wiatr", "Pół wieku wspomnień", "Po rosie, po grudzie", "Moja poezja". With her fluency in French and English, she was also involved in translations. In the field of fine arts, she practiced painting and printmaking. In 1962 she emigrated from Poland and in the United States she completed her studies in Romance studies and art. She returned to the country in 1980 to settle in one of the Zoliborz villas in a neighborhood exceptionally close to her heart, as it was remembered from her childhood and largely designed by her uncle, architect Kazimierz Tolloczka. Since 1987, she has been the founder of an annual literary prize for memoir writing.
