acrylic, canvas, 120 x 100 cm;
signed, dated and described on the back: L. Tarasewicz 2024 / acrylic on canvas 100 x 120 (in marker).
Leon Tarasewicz's main inspiration is nature. In the artist's field of interest is the landscape processed in such a way that, thanks to understatement, it can be considered an abstract representation. The painter shows rhythmically repeated
dark tree trunks, outlines of birds on the background of the winter landscape. Lines and circles
formed in a freshly plowed field, or flickering light variously piercing through the foliage of a tree crown. Tarasewicz's painterly fascination is followed by the artist's unique sensitivity to color and light, which seem more intense than those known
from the work of other artists. The sources of this sensitivity can be
be sought in Leon Tarasevich's background. The artist was born
and lives in Walily in Podlasie, among the eastern
borderlands of Poland. It is also a region where cultures and religions meet - the
Orthodox and Catholic, in which the way of imaging
is also diverse. Images known to the artist of
of saints depicted against the golden background of icons allow the search for transcendental values in the painter's art especially in his later works, objects made of
made of plexiglass and led, which move the cognitive discourse,
perception of the viewer and may pose the question of who ultimately
creates the artwork: the artist at the moment of creation or the viewer
at the moment of viewing it. Leon Tarasewicz is a graduate of the
Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, where in 1984 he received a
diploma in the studio of Tadeusz Dominik. In 1984, he made his debut
with a show at Warsaw's Foksal Gallery. Winner of the Paszport
"Polityka", the Jan Cybis Award and the Zofia and Jerzy
Nowosielski Foundation. In 2005, he was awarded the Silver Medal
Meritorious to Culture Gloria Artis, and in 2011 he became a Chevalier of the
Order of the Rebirth of Poland.
